Bluebirds are the Harbinger of Spring
Harbinger-a person or thing that announces or signals the approach of another. The Iroquois believe that the bluebird is a harbinger of spring that fights off the demigod of winter, Tawiscaron. According to folklore, many Native Americans hung dry gourds to entice bluebirds to nest near their settlements so they can enjoy their enchanting songs of happiness and hope. For many, spring’s arrival wouldn’t be official without the appearance of this small yet unmistakable creature. Scan the bare limbs at the forest’s edge for them. Sure enough, they arrive as scheduled. They were seen as harbingers of happiness in Chinese mythology possibly as far back as 1766 BC. Timing is everything they say. If we were to design a creature who could represents the welcome of a spring , they couldn’t quite touch the perfection of this little bird.
