This time of year falling leaves create a beautiful collage of yellow, red and orange hues tempting you to let them lay on your lawn. Well, don’t let them lay there too long because they can damage healthy grass. Raking the leaves has its benefits! The most important benefit is that it will help your grass grow. A thick layer of fallen leaves can deprive your lawn of sunlight which it needs to grow. If you look back and notice the trees decided to drop a few more leaves where you have already raked, its ok! Mowing your lawn one last time will shred up the remaining stray leaves and that won’t hurt your lawn at all. There are some additional benefits to raking that you may not know about. First, it eliminates damaging lawn thatch which is the dead grass material above the soil. Raking also reduces the amount of leaves that harbor diseases that affect trees and plantings. Last and certainly not least, you get to enjoy the fresh air and get a bit of exercise before winter decides to settle in!
