Hummingbirds In Northeast Ohio

Hummingbirds In Northeast Ohio!

Hummingbirds are important to the ecological system because they are such a unique bird.  Three quarters of the world's flowers depend on insects, birds and bats for pollination; of the 200 species of nectar-producing plants in North America, 150 of those depend on hummingbirds for seed dissemination, dispersal of pollen and regeneration.   So having them around in your garden is important!  Here in North East Ohio, if you have Bee Balm, Trumpet Honeysuckle, Columbine, Butterfly Bushes, Cardinal Flowers and many more you probably have seen them darting around your gardens.  These flowers depend on the hummingbird and vise versa! Hummingbirds can visit up to 2000 flowers a day but are very protective of their territory so this can be a challenge.  In fact, hummingbirds are considered one of the most aggressive birds when it comes to protecting their flowers making it important to provide plenty of hummingbird friendly flowers to accommodate them.  Between feeders and flowers you can make a lot of hummingbirds happy.

In addition to the flowers listed in the above paragraph,  these plants also attract hummingbirds in our area:  Petunia, Zinnia, Foxglove, Daylilies, Lupine, Hollyhock, Rose of Sharon, Verbena, Trumpet Vine, Hibiscus, Black & Blue Salvia, Weigela and if you search online you can find even more!  Stop into Gale’s Garden Centers located in Westlake & Willoughby Hills to get the plants you need to attract in more hummingbirds to your yard! We have hummingbird feeders too!
